Jebb Smith Ltd wins funding for their ‘Hydrogen Offshore Transfer System’

Funding awarded as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), financed by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

Announced today (15 September) by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps at London International Shipping Week, Jebb Smith Ltd has been awarded funding for the development of innovative technology to have zero-emission ships operating commercially by 2025.

Together with partners from Logan Energy Ltd and CENEX, the project aims to develop an efficient and safe Hydrogen Offshore Transfer System (HOTS).

“As we aim to transition to a net zero economy, hydrogen is emerging as a fuel of the future, especially for the maritime sector.  An efficient and safe Hydrogen Offshore Transfer System will be imperative for all areas of development including hydrogen powered vessels, the creation of green energy generated by offshore wind turbines, and the transporting of hydrogen.  By collaborating with such valued partners, we can drive this project to aid the achievement of green energy targets.”

George Smith, Director, Jebb Smith Ltd

Jebb Smith Ltd (JSL) will lead this project which will define the Hydrogen Offshore Transfer System’s required specifications and complete the product design and marine engineering accordingly. The product will become the Oasis Hydrogen Buoy, an adaption of Oasis Power Buoy – an offshore charging station currently in development.

As the UK prepares to host COP26 in the maritime city of Glasgow, it is great that we can announce funding for these fantastic projects in the maritime sector that will help the UK meet its net zero goals. From this competition we saw a very high level of demand, we have seen the very best of British ideas from all over the country. It is clear that not only does the UK have a great maritime history, but also a bright and greener future too.”

Simon Jones, Deputy Executive Chair and Chief Business Officer for Innovate UK

Announced in March 2020, and part of the Prime Minister’s Ten Point Plan to position the UK at the forefront of green shipbuilding and maritime technology, the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition is a £20m investment from government alongside a further c.£10m from industry to reduce emissions from the maritime sector. The programme is supporting 55 projects across the UK, including projects in Scotland, Northern Ireland and from the South West to the North East of England. As set out in the Clean Maritime Plan (2019), Government funding has been used to support early stage research relating to clean maritime. The programme will be used to support the research, design and development of zero emission technology and infrastructure solutions for maritime and to accelerate decarbonisation in the sector.
